The AUB-CCECS initiated the Syria Relief Project (SRP) in October 2012, initiating projects aimed at supporting Syrian refugee communities. Initial community assessments showed that most CBE programs were held in relief tents set up by various (I)NGOs, which was found to pose significant challenges in reaching target beneficiaries and withstanding the harsh winters of the Bekaa governorate.

With the permission of the Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs, AUB-CCECS has thus far designed and assembled three portable formal school structures within ITSs in Lebanon’s Bekaa governorate under the Ghata: Bringing Education to Informal Tented Settlements project. CBE programs and trainings are currently being implemented at these schools by AUB-CCECS’ network of trusted local partners and university faculty in effort to provide quality, accessible education to Syrian refugee children. In addition to just hosting CBE classes, AUB-CCECS Ghata schools have used as research field sites for AUB faculty and students, providing expertise knowledge used to help build local implementing partner capacity.
