Enhancing Learning, Innovative Teaching, Education Environment (ELITE)
Today, nearly 3 million Syrian children inside and outside the country are out of school, according to UNICEF estimates, demolishing Syria's achievement of near-universal education before the war [1]. It is host countries, like Turkey which is home to the largest number of Syrian refugees, with over 2.7 million people and half of them are children. Currently, Turkey allows Syrian children to enrol free in Turkish public schools, in addition to this, the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) has accredited temporary education centres, staffed with Syrian teachers, that use a modified Syrian Arabic curriculum.
According to estimates from the MoNE, approximately 325,000 Syrian children are enrolled in schools and temporary education centres (TECs) across the country. This figure represents a 50% increase since the last academic year in June 2015 [1]. UNICEF reported that in 2015, seven new schools were built in Turkey, 200 were renovated, 8,700 Syrian "volunteer" teachers were hired, and more than 10,000 Syrian students received subsidised school transportation, leading to a 30 per cent increase in the number of children in school over the previous year.
